Everywhere you looked around today, anyone you spoke with … the anticipation was palpable, the vibe was in the air. No other Olympic Medal won to date for Canada in the 2014 Sochi Olympics would mean more to us as a nation than winning the Gold Medal in today’s women’s Ice Hockey Final. Think about that for a moment. Down 2-0 with three minutes and a half remaining in women’s hockey greatest rivalry, things looked bleak … silver bleak. A minute later, USA’s lead is cut in half, and our hopes quadrupled. We’re back in it … for now. Now, what happened next, for as long as I live, I’ll never forget this. With our goalie pulled, looking for the tying goal, … the linesman bodychecks the Canadian defenseman at the blueline … not only taking away an easy dump in, keeping the pressure on for Canada … but instead, giving an empty net freebie shot for the Americans … and after those few agonizing seconds …watching the puck nearing the empty net, watching slow motion-ish as it appears to be going in … it hits the post, almost miracously!! OMG, losing the game that way woulda been a travesty! We kept fighting, came back and scored forcing overtime … and then won Gold in glorious sudden death overtime fashion! Greatest game EVER … way to go girls … you done us proud!!
I’ve been saying to myself for quite some time now, “one day I’m gonna go for my run, and run a half marathon”. That day never came, never came close … 12K was as far as I got. Even then, I was going through it in my mind, and I knew 100 minutes would be around my time (well, the time I wanted to achieve), but I also felt, I’d probably miss it by just a bit … and I did … 101 minutes & 3 seconds. Typically, I’m a bat outta hell type of runner, running fast from the start, so when I near home (8K), I stop. Today, I reigned in my pace from the beginning, I knew this would be the only way I’d ever run a half marathon. And at the 50 minute mark – what I perceive as the half way point, my audio cue had me at 10.64K … so I was well ahead of a sub 100 minute pace … and I kept up that pace for 13K … but as you can see from my 14K – 21K splits, I started slipping … slowly, not much … and again, at least all those splits were consistent. And check out those calories burned – 2384!!!! WHOA!!
Had as much fun chanting this from the comfort of my couch, as the lucky throngs in the Rogers Centre who watched the Jays extend their MLB leading win streak to nine … and they’re going for 10 wins in a row in a matter of hours … early Saturday matinee – gotta love baseball – Go Jays Go … KA-WA-SA-KI!!
… consecutive days I should add, 8K everyday! Not to mention the occasional nightly 3-4K walks with Tiffany K … not even counting those. That was gonna be my blog entry, the days and distance … but something remarkable happened on the 25th day, I recorded my best time ever. And not by a bit, by a lot, I obliterated my previous best (39 minutes) by a whopping 1 minute and 18 seconds! Gonna email my personal trainer and tell him that’s all I’ve got to give and not to expect anymore (private joke, lol)! To put it in perspective, my single best 1K split was 4:42 … today I ran the whole 8K AVERAGING 4:42 … I know, insane, eh? Friday Morning Run June 7, 2013 RunKeeper stats y’all!!
map blotted for privacy reasons …
my 8K splits …
… nobody even says cutoffs anymore … sup with that? Maybe people don’t bother to cut their jeans to make them? I know I do, anything I can to stretch/salvage some denim, you bet!! And, see I do smile, lol … hey, check out my red Calvin Klein socks matching my PF Flyers Number 5 … rockin’ that shit too … how old am I eh, lol?!
… every morning, everyday!! Ain’t easy at times, but I haven’t missed a single day since I began. Am posting a few RunKeeper pics … funny enough, my first two attempts were my best (maybe my body needs a break), and I did manage to squeak under 40 minutes on my second run, but the GPS shortchanged me on the distance, didn’t credit it for a full 8K. I did time myself once for half my circuit, and was under 20 minutes (while being a tad over 4K), putting me under the 5 minute per km barrier … but, as you can clearly see, I’m more of a 5:05/km runner. Ain’t the fastest fucker … but certainly ain’t no slowpoke either. I’ve NEVER been a runner, NEVER considered myself a runner, so now starting something so hardcore strenuous at my advanced age, AND, meanwhile achieving these times … well, let me say … am as proud as the proverbial motherfucking peacock!!
Half of the six … the Original Six … all three teams are still alive in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs. And, it got me thinking; those are some BADASS team names (badass teams too) … AND killer team logos to boot … sports teams nowadays suck with their lame-names, lamer logos. They don’t make ’em like they used to!
