Duck Pancakes!!

Finally getting around to blogging about Tiffany K‘s Duck Pancakes – pulled BBQ duck, a heaping helping of blueberry compote, and a huge scoop of creamy chèvre piled high on fresh flapjacks (I know, sounds SO decadently good!) from our initial brunch outing in November 2011 at Barque Smokehouse on Roncesvalles. Hey, better late than never, ‘sides, ain’t as if yer payin’ a pretty penny for the quality of my work … so no complainin’, lol. Found this pic, actually two pics – two perspectives … take a look! Neat!

for whom the bellwoods tolls

Bellwoods Brewery y’all!! Ambled on over after our Ossington Ave. Wonderboy birthday brunch. These hipster places are popping up all over, and it’s these doofuses who insist on letting everyone know how great and cool these places are with their geek tweets even though it may not be the case … as long as their social media fingers are the quickest outta the pockets/purses … but, I digress. I’ll speak the truth, PLUS I’m a beer drinker from WAY back with a shitload of experience under my 32″ waisted belt, so I kinda know my stuff. Here are my thoughts. I liked the beer (White Picket Fence Belgian Wheat, Bootknife (Belgian Brown)) enough, and I’m a HUGE fan of fresh beers, so they scored bonus points. But, there is no escaping economics, and these 650 ml bottle were priced too high, WAY too high – $5.85 (I recall, thereabouts in any case), and I won’t ever buy again due to that very reason. Saying you’re pricey is the proverbial understatement. A quick example/lesson of better beers w/ better prices; Beau’s Lugtread 4X600ml bottles – $15.85 … and my favourite night and day comparison – Chimay Premiere 750 ml – $6.00 … less 10¢ deposit to boot. Word to the wise, ya get what ya pay for … and my smart money’s on Chimay!!

South St. Burger Co.

… made it here … finally!! Had the group discount WagJag from what seems ages ago, and today decided to go. Oh, and I’ve never been to South St. … famous for their mango chutney (and no if you must know, not on you life, lol), as well as other fun (unique) offerings. I loaded my burger with gorgonzola, chipotle BBQ sauce, spicy onions, dijon horseradish mayo, w/lettuce and tomatoes too!! Tiff had guacamole, spicy onions, hot peppers, garlic mayo, honey mustard, w/lettuce and tomato (sorry, no pic). We agreed the food was good, Tiff especially loved the fries, and I second that – they were great. The burgers were good too … but nothing outstanding, we’ve def had better. Must admit, I really enjoyed the chipotle flavour on mine, the spiciness was perfect. Unfortunately the bottom line is we probably won’t go back … er, unless we snag another WagJag, lol!!

change of plans: português comida

… sorry Tiff. Stopped at my fave Sunday haunt and got roped into a Portuguese food feast. Good bud Alex didn’t even bother to ask if I wanted a beer today, he just ordered it … and he even remembered my brand, Stella (best the bar offers). He did ask if I wanted to join him/them for lunch, his treat … I can’t tell you how many times I’ve douched out and declined … not today. A few pics y’all …

Final thoughts; those three bottles of wine were drunk ‘tween eight manly men dining (seven actually … stuck with my Stella). Every Sunday, anyone who wants to eat/drink is welcomed. The bill is calculated as a whole, then divided by the number of people … roughly calculated too (no nitpicking), making paying easier. Today it was $20/head … ALL IN!! My lunch included three beers (typically $6-7 at any bar), all the food I could eat, a double shot of brandy and espresso … to call it a good bargain would be the proverbial understatement. Thanks again Alex, you’re good people!!

Charles in charge!!

Went to my fave Hakka joint today, ordered lunch to go (as you can see from the styro container), but as I was leaving, Charles the owner corralled me and insisted I sit and dine in the restaurant … so I did. He, his family … all his employees (many, long time employees) are all of Chinese descent, but born in India (on a side note; funny to hear him speak English fluently … with a British accent, lol) … hence the hot/spicy influence … think of it (Indian Hakka cuisine) as Chinese food kicked up a notch. He also tones it done if you want, today I did … told him to surprise me. In nothing flat tossed this together in his smoking hot wok for me … chicken chow mein he said … yep, yum!!

WagJagging

… all the way to the bank. One of those group discount deal-of-the-day websites, my favourite one btw. Tiffany K has been keeping a keen eye on the goings-on lately … got in on this incredible Special K score … did you know they made Flatbread Morning Sandwiches? Well me neither, but I do now, AND I got mine for free … same for their Morning Shake Beverages as well … wasn’t aware of them, but yep … gratis. Before the Kellogg’s haul y’all bought into $20 worth of food for $10 from South Street Burger Co. … and here’s the kicker; when Tiff was signing up for the deal, sitting in her account was an unexplained $5 credit … so actually it only cost five bucks five bucks five bucks (sorry Pizza Hut, lol)!! I’m so excited, have never been, although I was close to going on a number of occasions. From what I heard/read, their burger is throughthemothereffingroof delicious, PLUS included (no extra charge) is a shitload of cool toppings available … who does that? Mango chutney, HELLO?! 😀

if it’s Tuesday this must be Buffalo Wild Wings

… was extremely unexpected, the phone call … the invite. And who am I to turn down 1/2 price anything, let alone 1/2 price wings. Ordered 20 wild … but due to a bit of a delay getting danistrulythethirstyman his 2nd Creemore, was surprisingly comped 5 wings. Everyone was extremely apologetic (manager walked over for a personal apology … with my fingers & face all red-hot sauced, and my mouth full – munching on wings … trying my best to say thanks for the gesture, but more importantly wanting to shoo him away … please, don’t ever approach me while I’m in that condition, lol) and honestly wasn’t even creating a fuss for that beer either … not like I normally can, lol … was them that created all the fuss ’bout me sitting there all empty-glassed. Some pics to share … wanted to include gracious waitress but she was so shy … coulda swore she was Polish (with her thick accent, and being in these neck of the woods), but turns out Agi is a sweet little paprikash from Budapest!!

15 wild + blue cheese dip

my other 5 – I mean 10 … WOOHOO

ahhhhh, my Creemore finally, lol

lawyer-boy havin’ at ‘er … as if he’s never seen a chicken wing before, lol

kale and sausage soup

Portuguese sausage – Linguiça … to be more precise – this ain’t no run o’ the mill Italian sausage (which are great btw) that I’m accustomed to. Once you bite into these, you’ll never forget its distinctiveness. I often see my good friend John with take-out styrofoam containers (so often – I bust his balls ’cause of it, lol), with soup (everyday they offer something different, not that I have to tell you – but just to make it perfectly clear – I AM, lol) from this place (I’ve never been, although I’ve been to many, many Portuguese bakeries) – Courense Bakery on Bloor … and ALWAYS raving about how great it is … and he swears by its health benefits (and he was right, felt stuffed all day afterwards). Today, because of circumstances – and because I was hungry as a motherfucking horse at the time, John and I ventured for a sit down soup brunch – got there at 10:45. John said this was the optimum time, come on noon’s other side and you’re taking a big risk … chances are you’ll be shit out of luck and a sorry sold out soup sob story is what you’ll be hearing … and then, you wouldn’t even be able to cry in it, LOL!! When we entered, the young woman working behind the counter asks me if I like kale and sausage? Uh, HELLS YEAH, lol!! And I know I’m not a soup guy, but after today’s experience, promise to try being MORE of a soup guy …

my bowl and bun (LOVE Portuguese breads) …

look at that creaminess – and all the sausage …

low-key Thanksgiving!!

Circumstances (which I won’t get into, divulge) dictated this simple affair!! And ya know what?? … easy and understated beats fancy schmancyANYEFFINGTIME!! twenty years

Was hungry as that proverbial horse today. Normally don’t eat too much for lunch, and honestly, I don’t know how the rest of y’all do it, day after day. Went to my fave BBQ Chinese fast food take out joint (these places are all over the city), and every time I show my mug the owner reminds me that he’s known me for over twenty years. “Twenty years” over and over he keeps yelling as he laughs and smiles. Then I have to remind him, we’re BOTH getting old, lol!! He must be doing something right (look at the pics) … AND look at all the food he gave me – $7 + $1 for water shoulda been the price but it wasn’t, I’m embarrassed to tell ya what he charges me so I won’t … just look at the pics, lol!! 😉

LOVE this – so much to choose from …

Burger Week?!?!

… more like Burger Day!!

Tiffany K and I found out about it last minute, so were only able to take part on the final day.

Participating restaurants:

… and neatly mapped:

Once we became aware, we decided early yesterday morning to go to The Gladstone Hotel (#3) … their burgers sounded great, plus we were gonna be nearby – was a win win!! OMG, what a beautiful café … so relaxing, you def don’t wanna rush … ya wanna unwind soaking in the atmosphere, the company, just chillin’ ‘n veggin’!! It was here (after we ordered) that we talked about, came up with the idea of having our burger day … too bad it wasn’t planned earlier, otherwise we would have done it slightly differently … we would been smarter ’bout ‘pproaching it!!

The café (was packed, honestly, lol … this is a narrow view that I took when no one was in the shot):

duo de Blanche de Chambly (yes, VERY light and cloudy, AND yes great great beer):

uno B de C (ignore the beer glass)… nice Tiffany  Tiffany K, lol:

The burgers:

… and the bill (of course, lol):

Done!! But as I said, sitting in sumptuous comfort we decided this would only be the beginning … UNION Restaurant (#8), here we come!! And if you peek at the map, can see they’re just a stone’s throw away from each other, literally a hop skip and a jump apart!!

AHHHH, my beloved Creemore, lol:

The burgers:

Juicy, bit ‘o pink too:

… and the bill – Fuck Brunch, LOL!!:

Two down one to go … BQM Burgershoppe (#7) … (hold on, wait a minute … beep beep beep … we played that one smart, 1 burger, 1 beer each … something we should have started out doing .. am still pissed at those $4 fries, what was I thinking, ALMOST the cost of a burger, lol? … just takes away from the frugality – fun of it … and puts unwanted carbs in my belly) is next … our final stop, and it’s conveniently located on the same street and within walking distance, which we did!! But tiny Tiffany K’s gut was beginning to burst. Standing on the outside staring in was as close we were gonna get, but that was ok!! And as they say … two out of three ain’t bad!! No it ain’t, no it motherfucking ain’t!!

A few thoughts:

Hands down EVERYTHING was better at The Gladstone … ‘cept the burger … it was ordinary at best, nothing special & nothing memorable!! UNION on the other hand, while immediately (ok, initially) being a bit of a letdown, it was so fucking hot inside!! No chance of leisurely lingering for hours, like we wanted to at The Gladstone  you just wanted to scarf yer burger and bolt (Christ, I was tempted to ask for take-out … but meaning no Creemore, meant not a chance in hell, lol), come to think of it, we kinda did, lol!! Ok ok, they did have the aforementioned Creemore … and their burgers FUCKING rocked!! Without question, WAY better … ’twas a no-brainer picking a winner … the breadbutter pickles, the coco bun … momentarily I held a handful of Heaven!! I almost started to cry, LOL!!

… and a couple bonus pics:

Loved the Chambly so much (had it before btw, wasn’t new to me), went out and bought (snapped this before I did, lol) a halfsack today, lol:

Throughout the day was taking washroom mirror pics, lol … have a shitload too (and what does this have to do with this blogpost? Absolutely nothing, lol!!), but I’ll only show y’all the very first one, before I even made it into either restaurant … and I ain’t telling ya where I was at, lol … less ya know, the better trust me, lol … what a fucking nut (oui, moi, lol) … danistrulytheman 06/02/12:
