I’m home for a day … so I run!

… er, tried to! I needed to see what I have in me, what I can still do. I miss running, so today was gratifying. Upon reflection, I don’t know what surprises me more – my decent 1500m time considering lack of training/fitness level – OR, the fact that I accomplished the feat w/ coffee (3 cups this morning) and water (2 liters) being all I consumed (still haven’t eaten … yeah yeah, after I finish this post, lol) after a 13 hour day?! And then mere seconds after stopping my Garmin (being ever critical of myself), said, “shit, shoulda ran 110m more trying for a 1M PR” … LOL!

Bad news! And my Garmin 10K PR!

Only fitting today I had a great run! This will be my last run in awhile. I don’t know when I’ll be running again. It’s not by choice, I hope it won’t be as bad as I fear. Also, I won’t be around WP as well. I won’t be blogging, and I don’t think I’ll be commenting?! I want to, but my Reader/Feeds fucks-up on my phone at times, making simple tasks impossible! I’ll try my best to read blogs of friends, when and if I’m able to, and do what I can, if and when I can! It is what it is!

Ok, now my Garmin good news – I’m very pleased w/ today’s run, had a great rhythm going – 46:12 – the final 5K in 22:52 – the final 3K negative splits, finishing w/ a 4:27!

I needed this 8K!

Not so much the time – although I’m very pleased; only 75 seconds from a PR … but, more pleased in the way I ran it. I know I’ve had a few other good runs in terms of time, but till today, I always felt I was struggling. It wasn’t coming easily, or naturally. Every time I finished a run, I felt like death – a lot of times DURING a run, I felt like death. It was hard, it’s been hard getting motivated knowing/feeling that. Yet, I continued to persevere. Today, I was able to run, and for the first time, I felt incredibly strong, relaxed … I was enjoying it SO much. I was almost tempted to keep going, making it a 12K run. Check out my 4 middle splits – three 4:42 laps, and one 4:44 … WHOA, steady as she goes, lol! I picked up the pace and shaved 8 seconds on kilometer 7, and then I took off 8 more seconds on my final kilometer, finishing my run. I stopped my Garmin (36:58), and I just stood there … I didn’t hunch over, I wasn’t gasping for air … I stood there in amazement at what I had just done. I stood there thinking, I can’t believe I ran hard for 8K, and I feel as if I hadn’t ran at all – I felt THAT good! Not only was this my best run to date, it was my most enjoyable one as well. God, I missed that feeling, loving running! I’m happy it’s back!

Friday Morning 10K

I said I was going to do it, and I did. I think that’s what kept me motivated to complete it … saying I was going to do it to inspire/motivate … yet, I was the beneficiary, lol. And, I’m pleased w/ my time – 47:06 … 2 minutes short a PR. Although, I had another nagging issue trying to get my watch to stop, then reset (you can see by the extra two laps; 11 & 12). Those little things bother the fuck outta me, it coulda been disastrous with the clock ticking away, as I’m finished the distance, trying to get it to stop. And if you add time (the 10 laps), it comes to 46:58, not to mention my moving time (whatever the hell that is) of 47:01 – I know, it’s only slight differences, but I’m anal that way, and I only want the clock to measure it accurately giving me the time I deserve! Anyways, still chuffed – my 10K!

my mile!

I started this run, as a way of supplementing my other runs. I only ran it after running a strong 4K (or 5K). I’d be out of breath, and would walk briskly to my starting point about a kilometer away. I mean, I had to get home anyways, so I figured it’d be a good way to work on my speed (or lack thereof, lol), and it’s such a beautiful straight run! Looking at my Runkeeper right now, I see that I only started 1M timed runs on August 23 – I ran August 24 too, and my times then, when apparently I was in tip-top shape were 6:39 and 6:40 respectively. Today, April 25, I clocked 6:41 … woohoo, I’ll take it! After those 2 runs, I see I ran the distance 7 more times … funny, outta those 7 runs, 5 times I ran 6:30 or 6:31, lol. I guess that’s my mile time basically … other than my 6:23 PR (must be an aberration). Another funny thing; I quickly grew hating running it. It was all an all out gut-wrenching effort (and pain) every single time. My modus operandi was to run as fast as I could from the sound of the gun, trying as hard as I could to carry my speed as far as I could. Today, knowing that strategy wouldn’t work, eased off from the get-go, and just ran … ran hard the whole time mind you, but just kept running. Hey, not only am I happy w/ my time, I’m more happier I didn’t hate running the damned thing, lol!

there’s no crying in marathons!

OMG, I just realized something! As you all are aware, I signed up for my 1st marathon, the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (October 19). Unfortunately, I’ve been housebound w/ training … building a cardio foundation best I can. I tried hitting the roads about a month back, but winter wouldn’t let go its nasty grip. Now the plan is to FINALLY start/resume full-on training tomorrow (stay tuned) – YEAY!! Looking at the weather forecast, looks like were in for double digit temps for at least a week. Ok, back to my realization!! I see from my Running Records that I PR’ed a 12K on October 20th of last year. Took me a second putting 2+2 together … but that was the day LAST year’s marathon was run … and now I recall it completely; I purposely went for a dedication run of sorts that morning, acknowledging all the competitors. I also remember it because afterwards, I spent the entire day working doing demolition/construction/renovations! Even though it was a record run (I don’t run 12K often), I did it running well within myself! And, seeing that time/run … AND now focusing and visualizing for what lies ahead, all I can think is; if I could repeat that effort (3 1/2 times over) on October 19th, I’d be chuffed as fuck! AND, I know my title has absolutely nothing to w/ any of this … it just came to me. All the hard work anyone who attempts a marathon must endure isn’t lost on me in the slightest … and I thought it was appropriate knowing I’m in for a world of hurt …

… for old time’s sake y’all!

one hour run and gun!

I did this once before. Never attempted it again because it was too close to my 12K runs. Figured, if I wanna set a PR, it’d be for that distance. But, knowing I ain’t setting any PRs these days, got into a comfortable cruise control rhythm after 4K (actually sped up for the next 4K), and kept running. Now was about duration – 20+ minutes to go. Final 4K ended as I began. Was a great run! Oh, btw … my other timed hour run – I covered 12.52K. Yep, I bettered it, another PR, lol?!

My fave. The paved path! A man & his best friend … ain’t nuthin’ better!!

minus 10° 10K

No more contending with puddles, they’re frozen. Now I have slippery sidewalks. It’s harder and harder getting motivated, this was my first run in four days. On a positive note; knowing PRs aren’t possible, I run more relaxed, I’m not stressed about times … it’s actually MORE enjoyable. And, it’s not like I’m running slow, I’m only a couple of minutes off my PR. Put it this way, if I was to achieve a 47 minute time in an official, sanctioned 10K race, I’d be happy with myself, my time!

brrrrrr!

47 minute 10K – great run, very relaxed!

Late October 10K!

I did it! I PRed what is one of my tougher runs, and so late in the season. Last 10K PR occurred on September 6, so it gives you an idea of how hard it is to beat. Was cruising comfortably, looking for a sub 45 minute time, and was on pace to finish in 44:50 – ish. But at my 40 minute audio cue, I needed to be at least at 8.89 – 8.90, instead was only at 8.87 kilometers. I knew then, any hope was lost. Now, only question was of PRing, and by how much. Bettered it by 4 seconds, and missed 45 minutes by 8 seconds. It was my 8 and 9 kilometer splits where I lost about 15 seconds. Still pleased, I mean a PR is a PR, lol!

the kvetching runner!

What, me complain? Sorry. But, I have to … ’cause that’s who anal I am! It’s just getting harder and harder lately. I awake, go for my run … and when I return, it’s still pitch black out. Twice, I misstepped nearly twisting my ankle ’cause I couldn’t see sidewalk hazards in the darkness. I’ve been sporting a tuque for weeks, gloves too – HUGE pain in the arse working (trying to work) my phone, my RunKeeper! And with each passing day, temps are dropping … not to mention gale force swirling winds wreaking-wrunning havoc too. All these factors making it increasingly more difficult venturing out, leaving home’s comfy warmth, pushing myself and punishing myself … and to what end?! Honestly, feel like I’m ready to pack it in … not completely, just cut back on the frequency, and cut back out watching stop watches altogether. Timing is incredibly stressful, and equally exhilarating … but now since it appears PRs are out of the question, I feel it’s a good time to scraptheapp and focus on running, and enjoying it in its purest form, with nobody watching. Just … me myself and I!

File pic, prolly less than 2 months ago – guessing?!

Toronto Marathon Day!

And no, I didn’t run … I had to work today, plus I didn’t register in time, but if I did, I would have only entered for the half marathon, no way I’d be able to run a full marathon, not yet. So impressed by those who do. Kudos, congrats to all participants. But, getting caught up in the spirit of the day, went out this morning (such a beautiful, cool, crisp autumn day too) and demolished a 12K … set a PR by a whole minute and a half too! Woot woot! It’s my first PR of the month, and to achieve it today, makes it extra special!

hitting the 8K road again!

Running is hard! It’s very hard when you haven’t trained, for whatever the reason. It’s very hard to put on your gear and head out the door. I had two goals in mind after what amounts to being unable to run for the past eleven days. I wanted to complete my 8K run without stopping, and I wanted to establish a good pace from the 1st kilometer, and keep it till the end. I wasn’t looking for anything near my PR. I wanted to run, non-stop at a fairly fast pace. I did it. I’ll admit, it wasn’t easy … running at times takes so much mental strength, as well as physical conditioning. I’d rank today’s run as one of my best ever, especially with all of my adversities of late. I’m hoping with better health, and good weather, my training will continue uninterrupted.

September! My Month of PR Runs!

Not that July, or August weren’t filled with good runs – they were. Seems like in September, I kicked it up a notch, and was particularly good. I set five PRs during the month … all within a nineteen day span! Plenty chuffed with myself!

Do you remember – September?

Sept. 5 – 1M – 6:23

Sept. 6 – 10K – 45:12

Sept. 14 – 5K – 21:44

Sept. 16 – 4K – 17:05

Sept. 23 – 21.1K – 1:41:03

my garbage run!

… garbage day, recycling day run. Something comforting, relaxing … mentally preparing myself for my morning run as I’m walking back and forth, taking all my bins, garbage to the curb. Was a great run, felt strong, missed my PR by under 50 seconds … check out my last few splits. Had my playlist on repeat song, and of course I don’t dare waste time trying to correct it … was flying w/ Linkin Park‘s Somewhere I Belong blaring in my ears for 36 minutes and 33 seconds for those 8K …

I’m a 6:30 mile guy + steamrolled by car update!!

I started trying for 1mile times late August. Since then, I’ve attempted it a total of 8 times. It’s a tough run, pretty much giving everything your body can give, for those grueling 6+ minutes. Now, it’s almost to the point where I dread it, ’cause it completely drains/saps me … AND, because I haven’t seen much improvement. Only 17 seconds separates my fastest & slowest times, but with two 6:30s, and two 6:31s outta the eight, that seems to be my average, so for the time being, I consider myself a 6:30 miler. I know I’m capable of PRing it at 6:10 – 6:15. It’s just a matter of nailing it. One day, before it kills me, lol!

Today I noticed this big-ass bruise. Thing’s the size of a football. Never really felt any pain when the car hit me, my ankle certainly did though. Now, it really showing where I got smacked by the car’s hood. And it’s starting to hurt – as a bruise hurts.

… damn danistrulytheman, it don’t look good … OUCH!!

Another 4K PR, & weekend musings!

quickie recap:

here’s my record run – ALMOST cracked the 17 minute barrier. honestly, don’t think i’m capable of giving more than i did today.

Photo

saturday:

we decided to paint. paint the garage door. i hate painting. but, the day was PERFECT … sunny, breezy, about 18°. plus, that shit was like clam chowder, like tapioca pudding … so i don’t really consider it painting, more like globbing on thick shit, lol. and OMFG, Tiff picked out the most gorgeous colour (Behr’s antique white 1823u from Home Depot), semi-gloss … the premium plus w/ primer. we def have the best looking garage door in the neighbourhood.

sunday:

picked up the italians from the airport. drove them home, had the best time listening to their experiences/vacation stories. late evening, went out for dinner, and ’cause of boy wonder’s clout, the bill for the WHOLE dinner came to a whopping $7 + tax … I was charged for only ONE beer, lol!! suffice it to say, we left a huge-ass tip. it’s either the cheapest dinner we ever had, or the most expensive beer of all time, lol. was a great day, a great week-end.

tuesday:

tomorrow – stay tuned. big birthday bash!

Friday the 13th 5K!!

… ok, so I ran it today – Saturday the 14th … just doesn’t have the same ring to it, does it, lol?! Is only my second time running the distance, I vowed not to after my setting such a fast time in late July. Today, figured it was mine for the taking. And it was … shaved 18 seconds off my record. WOW! I see that I’ve PRed four distances in September … and only half the month has elapsed. Today, it just so happens, also officially marks four months of danistrulytherunningman as well. WOW again … yep, lots has happened during these past four months!

it’s not the heat, it’s the stupidity!!

… really don’t know what I was thinking these last couple of days?! Yesterday was in the 40s, and in the 30s as I awoke … yet, I still run, and STILL KILL IT!! A 17:52 4K in this energy-sapping humidity, I’ll happily take that time till the cows come home!!

Plus, Tiff K & I sucked it up for these couple of Indian Summer days, absolutely REFUSING to turn on the A/C … unlike our zealot A/C using/loving next door neighbours who have that fecking thing cranked all seasons, sans one. I know, MORE stupidity,eh, lol?!

and, only 40 seconds off my PR; CRAZY EH?

Goin’ 4K Krazy!

I PRed it last day of August, with what I thought was unapproachable time for at least awhile. I was wrong! I busted out, running hard the whole way, bettering my mark by nine seconds … that’s HUGE! I know my 1mile runs are helping me tremendously, teaching me to establish a quick pace … and then I try like hell to maintain it for the duration of my run. Man, still stoked (was yesterday’s run – am one day late posting) … after my recent 10K (3 days earlier), this def ranks as my second best run! Run Dan, run!

new 4K PR: 17:12

running thoughts, running musings!

Had two pretty good runs today. Must admit it wasn’t easy, but I persevered. My 4K was sub 18 minutes, which is always a good thing, but as I said, I really had to fight to get it. After walking/light jogging, and nearing my 1 mile run starting point, I said to myself, just run all six fractions evenly/equally (or, at least try to), and see what happens. Normally, for the mile … I start sprinting like a bat outta hell, trying to hang on (lung burning survive I mean, lol) till the very end. I’m thrilled I changed my strategy, I ran the mile … and, I’ll be honest – I felt as if I was jogging (at a quick pace albeit) it … and I STILL only missed my PR by 12 seconds!! One day when I’m feeling stronger, will approach my 1mile run exactly the same way as today, and I know I’ll def PR. I’m still experimenting/learning new/different things with running. And don’t forget y’all, I’m a newbienovice to the game … I’m a greenrunner, lol!

… was a beautiful, breezy, 15° sunny Sunday morning! And nope, ain’t smiling … you can’t make me, lol!
