Canada’s climate change

Snapped this January 13 while out Sunday driving. Best I could do under the circumstances, keeping hands on the wheel, eyes on the road … it’s a VW convertible with the top down in the dead of winter. The day before we hit 15° C setting a record. It even felt warmer, was a beautiful, bright, sunny day … today was pretty much the same in the temp. dept. … sans the extra warmth of the sun. Old man winter, gotta love him!! 😎

you had me at Steak & Guinness

… guy in line ahead of me too apparently, wife quipped “it’ll do for the car ride home”, lol. First I’ve heard of Williams-Sonoma artisans’ market, and from what I’ve seen, seems like they have a winner on their hands. A few pics.

influenza vaccinated

… finally. And btw, that’s the flu shot to y’all belonging to the Simpleton family. My doc was always booked, repeated calls seeking slipping in ‘ncase of cancelled appointments proved fruitless. Had no choice but to go to my local Rexall and let the pharmacist needle me. That’s right, in Ontario select pharmacies are now allowed to give flu shots … no appointment, any day … all the time. Simply walk in, hand over your Health Card, fill out the taking one minute of your time yes/no questionnaire and you’re good to go … oh and to non-Canadian readers of my blog … it’s FREE … the hardest part (most upsetting part I should say) was removing my sweater providing an easy upper arm target … meanwhile messing my coiffe … 😮

Robert Lamm original uncut piano solo version

… the much much better version btw, but due of its obscurity  … rarely heard, if at all … what you hear on the radio is the shortened version starting with horns blaring … editing the best part … the piano intro … and that’s a shame …

respite, reflections

A well deserved break, an opportunity to look back. Our Christmas tradition revolves around Christmas Eve, and includes a lot of food. Copious amounts of food, and not only this time of year. It’s in our culture to be overly generous with food. To give you an indication, Tiffany K and I haven’t left the house for groceries since … that’s almost a week. I’m finally reclaiming the fridge as my own, lol. Not to mention I froze leftovers knowing we couldn’t eat everything before spoiling. This year I even tackled baccala. Was very proud of my accomplishment, from sourcing this fish market in the city that carries the best baccala, a part of the city where parking is at a premium, never any spots available, to researching online various methods/rules of thumb preparing it. Generally soaking 1-3 days was the advice, two was better, and three if you had the time. Naturally I opted for the 72 hour soak, with 3-4 changes of water daily. I also researched baccala and potatoes in a tomato sauce recipes as I’ve had this years ago from this great little Italian bakery that used to make it (Fridays only) during the holidays. Alas, they moved, went out of business … not really sure, only know my baccala went along with them. In all my research, nobody bothered to mention the skinning of the fish and removing of the bones might prove challenging if attempting for the first time … thanks internet gurus, lol. Luckily when I bought the baccala I over bought … close to 3 lb, not the 2 lb I was planning to, so I did have some leeway with the wastage. I didn’t settle on any one particular recipe either. I read many to get ideas, that’s what I do, I know my way around a kitchen and felt comfortable enough combining/assembling the ingredients in a casserole dish and baking it without any difficulties. I eyeballed the potatoes I needed (was looking for a 50-50 ratio) and proceeded. And another thing you don’t see in these recipes is for parboiling the spuds before baking? I ALWAYS do to ensure them being cooked through … plus the oven temps they tell you to use are too low (350º – 375º) so I completely ignore that part of the recipe and crank it to 400º – 425º. One thing that did catch my eye, and I was so happy this person wrote this … not sure why others didn’t since it was so helpful? If I was making this recipe, but substituting the baccala with … let’s say tilapia, I’d be seasoning (salting) the you know what out of it. Everything. The fish, my home made tomato sauce … the potatoes … especially the potatoes. But this recipe writer … recipe advisor cautions on doing so due to the baccala’s inherent saltiness. Sure I soaked it, rehydrating it … changing water over and over, but it still retains plenty of salt to sufficiently season the whole dish. And for this tidbit you included, my baccala dish was sublime … and I thank you. It was the highlight of the dinner (but was so busy/preoccupied I didn’t snap any pics to share – sorry), and I was thrilled with my work, accomplishment … my success.

It’s funny after our Eve feast, a long time spent filling our bellies as you can imagine … a mere twelve hours later we’re back at the table for a HUGE breakfast blowout before the troops pack their booty and go on their merry (Christmas) way. Now that our dinner leftovers are done, felt like relieving that today, but on a lesser scale … and in a quieter moment. And now, found time to take a pic. 😆

ain’t no iPhoney

Where do I begin? For once, my giddiness has gotten the better of me … don’t have a clue, am somewhat stumped where to start, lol. But I’ll try. Sorry distracted, digressing … soaking it all in … got a woodie as an alternate post just popped into my head … whaddya think, lol?? Ok here I go, this all started/happened when the iPhone 5 was released, a week later I believe. Innocently placed my iP4 in the cupholder while driving and 20 minutes later when I stopped for gas noticed my glass back was cracked. As God as my witness, I did NOTHING … it JUST cracked. I was heartbroken, and when home taped it preventing further cracking, slapped on a case too … it’s been on ever since, hoping to keep everything tight, not compromising its operation. Let time pass without replacing it only to let the iPhone 5 hoopla pass … have you ever tried shopping at an Apple Store? Yep, nuts. Finally went in and quickly accessed I’d be stuck with the bill replacing it, which isn’t so bad but since I didn’t break it … didn’t drop it … nothing … and was hoping my pleas would fall on big-fat empathetic ears, but fearing they wouldn’t… AND I didn’t want my good luck winning streak, everyone seeing things my way coming to an end … not to mention the earliest Genius Bar appointment available was 2 days away. Are you kidding me? No thanks … fuck you Apple, I’m looking elsewhere, lol!! Eventually my search ended with Monolith … wood is good!! Love their exotics … and after great deliberation, went with the wenge. Placed my order November 29, arrived December 28 … one month later, exactly. Two thoughts; 1: Good things come to those who wait. 2: What the hell took so long? Now, that’s a motherfucking pick em, lol!! 😀

what a difference a day makes

… and a couple years!! Back then I’d stack myself up against any other snow shoveler … wished it was Olympic event I was that good … very quick and efficient, working at a brisk walking pace, even running at times. Was a time I’d gladly go out 3 times a day during winter storms keeping our driveway cleared, AND do the neighbour’s as well when they were away to boot. Now, hope I never see the stuff, lol. Guessing we got a good 10 cm … was heavy and dense which didn’t help … all I know is my lungs are burning and I’m winded. In my best Danny Glover/Roger Murtaugh Lethal Weapon impersonation … I’m too old for this shit!!

Been on a music diggin’ kick lately (can ya tell, lol?) , other blog posts haven’t been there recently for a variety of reasons, and if I ain’t happy, ain’t pushing Publish … lots of trash-tossing lately folks.. Heard this today on my Psychedelic Sunday with Andy Frost … GREAT GREAT song by Three Dog Night … and with Christmas and the holidays upon us … and the song’s feelgoodfestiveness felt throughout … figured one more for the road … as it were, wouldn’t hurt. So please listen and enjoy (btw, Happy Holidays y’all). No need to worry, concern your pretty little heads with what appears to be a danistrulytheman absence … ’cause I’m sayin’ it ain’t so … will be back with a vengeance, BIGGER and better than ever … with plenty of verbal assaults strategically strewn about, lol. Ya can’t keep a good man down …

Charles in charge!!

Went to my fave Hakka joint today, ordered lunch to go (as you can see from the styro container), but as I was leaving, Charles the owner corralled me and insisted I sit and dine in the restaurant … so I did. He, his family … all his employees (many, long time employees) are all of Chinese descent, but born in India (on a side note; funny to hear him speak English fluently … with a British accent, lol) … hence the hot/spicy influence … think of it (Indian Hakka cuisine) as Chinese food kicked up a notch. He also tones it done if you want, today I did … told him to surprise me. In nothing flat tossed this together in his smoking hot wok for me … chicken chow mein he said … yep, yum!!

“all Daniels are bad” – Ana

… is what she said when she read my name off my AMEX as I was takin’ ‘vantage of their good customer loyalty program deal (told ya all I was gonna weasel my way in, lol) they were offering in conjunction with Lowe’s. She said it affectionately referring to her little rapscallion who shares my name, and her deep motherly love for him. And I AGREED with her … all of us ARE bad, lol. We continued talking – we both love the name Daniel … it truly is a beautiful name and one thing we both love is its uncommonness. Ana, thanks for that memorable little blip in my otherwise unforgettable day … something tells me your little Daniel is the man too, lol!! 😎

new do – new pic

Ok, so the do ain’t exactly new … is only slightly changed … busted, lol. But it’s a haircut nonetheless and nothing beats those 75 carefree minutes (washes my hair twice – before and after the cut – my stylist is the best, but so am I and I deserve it) spent being quaffed and pampered, laughing and shooting the shit, leaving refreshed … a feeling-good-about-myself-man, ‘nstead of that my-long-hair-is-finally-getting-on-my-nerves-I-can’t-take-it-anymore-dude who walked in.

love falling back

… gaining an hour. Wish we could keep doing that every day, lol. Always so much controversy regarding Daylight saving time … people love it, people hate it. Some countries use DST, some don’t. Canada does, but not the entire country … Saskatchewan doesn’t … neither does British Columbia’s Peace Region. I know, very confusing, lol. Don’t know what the perfect system is, don’t really give a shit either … all I know is that I love waking up with an extra hour’s worth of sleep in the tank!!
