4K PR … + 1mile PR!!

Wow, I amazed myself. Lord knows I needed a great day, my endurance and pace have been suffering lately. And my 4K is tough for me to improve upon, since my old time was fast, but I bettered it by 5 seconds. AND THEN, fifteen minutes later … I surprised myself lowering my mile to 6:31 (an 8 second improvement). I still can’t believe I had enough left in the tank after those grueling, energy sapping four kilometers?! Oh, and am also surprised since it’s very humid (feels like 30°), and the air feels so thick, making breathing difficult. Like I said, wow … chuffed again!

Wow! What A Summer!

Mid August already, lows of 15, highs of 25 during the past month and a half is what we’ve had, and I’m loving it! Cool nights, warm days. A/C off, windows wide open. Great temps for running too. My perfect summer!

Campagnolo Birthday Bash Blowout!!

Great, great restaurant on Dundas … had the best fucking time!! We ordered the WHOLE menu … minus 4 starters, and 1 main, lol!! After dinner, we walked up to College St. for gelato … was so pleasant, despite the humidity … the walk I mean, the gelato was through the mofo roof sublime too!! A few pics y’all!!

30 days – 256 kilometers: Ramblings of a Runner!

Thirty CONSECUTIVE days! Since May 14th when I began, I covered over 500 kilometers. That’s from Toronto to Ottawa (now, I have to run back, lol). This past week has been a particularly good one. I’ve felt strong, having accomplished new goals, set a 10K PR of 45:33 – my proudest achievement – but it’s my last 6K (my quickest splits) that still blows me away … 26:57.

For the last few days, I’ve been trying to better my 17:45 4K time. Sunday, I ran 17:53. Monday, I did the same, 17:53 – how’s that for consistency? And, it’s been hot (and humid) as hell lately, even in the early morning … temps feeling like 32°. Today, I ran it in 17:46 – one second off my PR … and right now, I honestly don’t know where I can improve?! I look at my splits, I just don’t see much more that I can give … but I can promise you, I’ll be trying!

a 12 kilometer run!

… ’cause twelve’s a beautiful number!

Today was a great day for running, all that humidity we had lingering lifted … nothing but sunshine, and a cool breeze to enjoy my early morning run. Was perfect. After two kilometers, I knew I wasn’t on any sort of record pace, so I settled into a comfortable run … it was then I knew I wanted to challenge myself for distance, and I thought 12K would be easy enough. And it was, I maintained a consistent pace (as you can see from my splits), and I was very happy with my time – a 57:43 clocking. And check out the calories burned – 960 … yeah, I’ll take that. Nice way to start the day!

hot & humid hump day run!!

… felt like 32°, actually was that hot/muggy throughout the night, we didn’t get any relief. At that point breathing becomes increasing difficult, let alone running. But off I went, and you know at times when you start your run, you’re still unsure how you feel? Today was one of those days. I felt OK after 5 minutes, and pushed hard during the next 5 minutes … it was after my 10 minute distance cue, I knew I felt strong, and that I’d try hard for a fast 4K time. And I did well! My second fastest time ever, missed my PR by 13 seconds … a sub eighteen minute clocking … also, I achieved a PR for min/km pace – 4:16 … AND, each successive kilometer was faster … I quickened my pace from start to finish. All in all, a solid run, a positive run! Oh, plus my run home – my second 4K was no slouch either, was a good run as well!

17:58 – considering the conditions; quite pleased

Perfect Day In Paradise!!

God we’ve been blessed with the best temps lately … lows of 10° and highs of 20° … ideal for sleeping, yet not hot during the day … and today was a not-a-cloud-in-the-sky-clear-blue-sky-day … I love it!!

Ok, this blogpost is one of those all over the fucking place posts … fair warning!

I had a lot of shit on my plate today … good shit though … I went and got a physical today, first time I’ve had a physical in I don’t know how long I’ve had a physical, lol … weighed in at 73kg – 160lb … I don’t think I’ve been that weight since I was a teen-ager … and how excited do you think I was ready to spill the beans, divulging to the Doc ’bout my 8K mornings … no way I was gonna refrain from telling him that, lol … and yeah, the good doctor was impressed, and by my weight … the changes in my life – will get to that, be patient (pun, lol) as well!

Oh, and this early morning’s 6:30 run turned into a 10K’er … and I responded with a PR of 48 minutes – one full minute faster than before …

I’m proud that I was under 5 minutes on every single kilometer split … in fact, I was very, very consistent throughout – my slowest (KM 9) was only 10 seconds off pace … I think I was reserving energy while waiting for the 45 minute audio cue, leaving something in the tank for the final surge … OH, and also (forgot to mention) … I’ve been going out nightly with Tiff for her 5.3 km walks … and lemme tell y’all they ain’t exactly easy, they take a toll on my body as well. Lately, I’ve been a 12 hour run/walk cycle … like clockwork!

And all these changes I mentioned; flaxseed, hemp seed, edamame, Greek yogurt, Rainbow Trout (not new, but more of it), organic pre-washed baby kale (and spinach) … I know I’m missing many … the point is I’m eating/living better! Since we got the Vitamix, we’ve both been doing incredibly better – in fact for one week straight, we were using it four times daily (Tiff with her Harley body reset diet, and me with my own thing) … even now, it’s two or three times a day, and right now, it’s been only for smoothies, healthy smoothies … but still, we’re def getting our money’s worth!

Things are going great lately with all of this, the running (and walking), the healthier diet … I’m just chuffed as fuck with it all … today was a perfect day in my paradise, and I thought I’d share!!

Downtown Damage!!

… even before I strapped on my Sauconys this morning, was aware of last night’s storm damage watching my morning TV news channels. It’s bad enough dealing with the assortment of hazards I have to contend with on a daily basis … I can’t tell how many car hoods I’ve smacked startling oblivious drivers, making them aware of my existence, my right-of -way, not to mention arms flailing, gesturing to pay attention to pedestrians … but this tops ’em all. Roadblock! Now, I ain’t no arborist, but I’m betting this tree was well over a hundred years old, maybe even two?!

11 days in a row

… 88 kilometers!! This morning was VERY cold – minus three w/ windchill … tuque and gloves were mandatory. While it wasn’t my fastest time, something about today’s run made it the best so far (RunKeeper even gave me two new records – distance & calories burned, lol), I was well within myself despite the frigid/windy conditions, I did quicken my pace and my final 3K were strong. Also, I’ve noticed that forcing myself to run every day, has pushed me past the point of where my body constantly feels beaten to shit … no more lingering soreness, tight muscles … no more strained hammies, pulled groin … quads are pain free too. I know eventually, I’ll need a break, I’ll hit the wall … just might not tell y’all though, lol!

Grilled Rainbow Trout!!

Greek style, my version at least. Bought four gorgeous fillets and laid them skin side down on heavy duty aluminum foil, seasoned them with sea salt, pepper, oregano, thinly sliced sweet onion, a bit of more seasoning, and finished by squeezing the juice from a lemon over top of it all. Using an equally sized piece of foil, I then covered it and folded the edges of both pieces together (making it airtight) and essentially created a pouch, which I threw on the hot grill. Now, while it’s more poaching, ’cause of being steamed in the pouch, I did manoever it over the hot coals to crisp the skin, as well as subtly infusing charcoal flavour … cooking it perfectly, if I do pat myself on the back saying so myself. Served with Boston lettuce, tomatoes, olives, and feta salad (and with pita bread and tzatziki – sorry, no pic), and drizzled with Acropolis (y’all must know the drill by now, lol), and you got yourself one helluva great Greek meal!

Getting my Spring skinny on!

Warmer temps means no more loose layered clothes. I had 4 pounds that I needed to shed, yet I managed 4 more … and all in the past few weeks. More moving, less beer, wiser food choices. Plenty of hard work and dedication, more ahead … but it’s a start, and today I’m pleased.

Old man shaking his skinny-assed moneymaker, lol …

we got walloped

… and I’m the first to admit this pic does a disservice reflecting said shellacking, but trust me … it WAS BAD … and after plowing through a shit-load of snowbanks in my trusty Chevy 4X4 with the best money can buy Michelin LTX A/T2 rubber firmly planted on all four corners keeping me sure-footed and steady as she goes. Meanwhile, toss in three full blown sweating-my-ass-off-shovelling-sessions while you’re at it for good measure … hopefully in true danistrulythemanunderstanding fashion, y’all graciously exsqueeze me, empathize with me … as I pussy out snapping this pic standing in the cozy comfort and warmth from … INSIDE my house …

more chillin’ than grillin’

Warm days have been great, I ain’t complainin’. Just that during these days my motivation/excitement level to bbq is through the proverbial roof. But, by the time I get home after stopping and shopping for groceries, and then firing up the grill (doing some prep work while I wait) … day suddenly disappears into night. Temps drop quickly too – maybe just appears that way as I’m special occasion/celebrating drinking my frosty Creemore, lol. Here’s a few pics; two strip steaks (rubbed liberally with garlic salt, cracked black pepper, and my secret – Barberian’s Steak Seasoning), and four Mexican style sausages courtesy my local Fortinos … enjoy y’all!!
